TMS Therapy - Find the Beauty in Life Again

NeuroStar uses transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to target key areas of the brain that are underactive in people with depression. It is not ECT (electroconvulsive therapy). While the exact cause of depression is not known, the leading scientific theory is that it is caused by an imbalance of the brain’s neurotransmitters, which are chemical messengers that send signals between brain cells.

During a NeuroStar Advanced Therapy session, a magnet similar in strength to that used in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine is used to stimulate nerve cells in the area of the brain thought to control mood. These magnetic pulses may have a positive effect on the brain’s neurotransmitter levels, making long-term remission possible

If antidepressant medication is not helping you- Don’t Give Up!

TMS Therapy has been proven to be highly effective in helping people with symptoms of severe depression and OCD, along with  comorbid anxiety that may be related to depression. It is safe, non-invasive, FDA cleared, and covered by most insurances. Clinics around the country using TMS have seen thousands of people experience great improvement in their mood and in turn have gained a renewed optimism about life.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a type of brain stimulation therapy that elicits magnetic waves to target nerve cells focused on mood regulation. The powerful magnetic pulses of TMS cause small electrical currents that stimulate nerve cells in specific regions of the brain. These targeted regions in people with depression are known to be under active, and TMS helps increase activity to help with mood control and depression. MedPsych Integrated uses NeuroStar Advanced Therapy TMS to treat depression. Using clinically tested trials, NeuroStar TMS has shown that 7 out of 10 patients respond to TMS, and 50 percent will achieve long-term remission. This is a safe, alternative to drugs and one of the best TMS therapies available.

You will sit in a very comfortable chair and one of our technicians will place an electromagnetic coil band around your head. Once the customized calibrations are selected, the machine will be turned on and it will feel like a tapping on your head with possible discomfort at or near the treatment site. Most people find it quite relaxing. Each session lasts 19-37 minutes which can be used to catch up on your email or watching Netflix. Typically, TMS therapy sessions are scheduled five days a week for four to six weeks. The length varies depending on your individualized treatment plan which will be designed by Dr. Nadia Meyer.

TMS therapy is a safe and effective treatment for depression available today. The most common side effect is minor scalp irritation and this only occurs in about 5% of patients. Other possible side effects include headaches, lightheadedness and tingling which are mild and temporary if they do occur.

Though it is extremely rare, TMS can induce a seizure. It is estimated that 1 in 30,000 people may have a seizure from TMS. However, given the fact that the average patient receives around 30 sessions of TMS, many antidepressants have a greater chance of causing a seizure. One popular medication used for example, has a rate of 0.4% while TMS has a 0.1 % rate. That’s a risk rate of 4 in 1000 on certain medications vs 1 in 1000 with TMS.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a safe and effective treatment for people who have not achieved remission from depression with antidepressants alone.
