Meet Sonya Isler: A Trailblazer in Mental Health Care

For over three decades, Sonya Renee Isler has been a dedicated advocate and provider in the field of mental health. Her passion for helping others was ignited early in life, inspired by the compassionate presence of a church nurse, clad in a starched white uniform, offering care to those in need.

Sonya’s remarkable journey in nursing began in 1993 when she earned her Licensed Practical Nursing degree from Johnston Community College in Smithfield, NC. She advanced her education with an Associate’s Degree in Nursing in 1998 from Lenoir Community College in Kinston, NC, followed by a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from East Carolina University in 2000. Her drive for excellence led her to achieve a dual Master’s Degree in Nursing and Business Administration with a focus on Healthcare Management from the University of Phoenix in 2007. In 2018, she completed a Master of Science in Nursing with a specialization as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) at UNC Chapel Hill.

Throughout her career, Sonya has excelled in diverse roles, including staff nurse, nurse educator, preceptor, manager, and supervisor within state, federal, and local healthcare systems. Her varied experiences cultivated a deep passion for listening to others and a commitment to mental health care. Returning to the PMHNP field allowed Sonya to bring her wealth of knowledge and empathy to managing and treating patients comprehensively.

Over the past six years, Sonya has made a profound impact as a PMHNP, providing care to patients of all ages, including those managing opioid dependence. Her holistic approach, clinical expertise, and dedication to mental health advocacy continue to transform lives.

When she’s not making a difference in the lives of her patients, Sonya enjoys shopping, reading, and exploring new destinations through travel.
